Up North......................
Accelerating towards total darkness, like I'm looking back from a train once its entered the tunnel. The darkness can get to you if you let it, what gets me the most though is the rain, seemingly endless drizzle that could wash away your mind. Combining the endless night with the rain can break a person, it takes away your energy; it starts to make decisions for you: Me: “shall I go out tonight, round my mates pad, or to the pub in town?” Late November: “Nah, you don’t want to go out in this, best relax, try and finish that book, watch some TV or maybe write a few emails, or just go to bed, busy day tomorrow – unless the weather is shit again, then you may as well stay put”.
The light at the end of this tunnel is too far away to contemplate, this will make things worse. There is always something in this life to look for or to think about. It can come in many forms, just like making the most of those last few days before school started again, or when you manage to speak to someone new on a journey to work, not that this was a frequent event, but when it happens, everything seems better, that is the power of the mind.
When the snow finally arrives for good, that white blanket seems to lift an entire town, whether it’s just the simple natural beauty of freshly fallen snow or the extra light that exists when everything is white. I am craving for a break, to see the snow, to walk on the lakes of ice, to walk on the sea, out to islands that can be miles away. I've even been told it’s possible (although not recommended) to walk to Finland……maybe next year for that one!? But soon I hope I'll get to do these things again, and I hope I see the nordic lights, green and blue (and sometimes red if you’re very lucky) travelling across the sky like they have the knowledge of what it is to be a phenomenon, vague and unpredictable, a little different every time, it amazes me how something like that can be so silent.

Well, if Sweden wasn't so depressing, we wouldn't have all those cool movies where Death and the knight play chess and then frolic through a meadow.
that was a good one. why is red the rarest colour in the spectrum? like when you go deep under water and the goldfish all turn blue. did you take that picture? it's naaiiice. is that outside your house? you should set fire to those fir trees and take a photograph.
Fuck it and eat it.

len, that really is a lovely photo -it's a whole different world over there! :).

You are a man with more knowledge than myself, please share with me this cinema you speak of, I am more than intrigued - sounds like a movie plot that I wanted to think of first.

The goldfish all turn blue because red has the lowest frequency (highest wavelength) of visible light, so its got less energy and is filtered out first the deeper you go. But in the aurora borealis (the northern lights) electrons in the solar wind (from the sun) collide with atoms (mainly oxygen and nitrogen) as they enter the earths atmosphere where blue and green dominate due to higher energy light (smaller wavelength, higher frequency) piercing further into the atmosphere and being absorbed and emitted by oxygen more efficiently for the observer to see below. You can see red also when its very clear, still and calm (usually very cold).
Fuck, got a bit carried away there - but I think I am almost right with that, I guess there will be stuff on the net about it somewhere.....try wikipedia or the NASA website...??
I should've set fire to those tree's - would've bee like that "take my breath away video" by Berlin.....then again, maybe not.

Lee, this is a place where people come and visit, or stay for a year and tend to have completely split views of the place. Some hate it, find it depressing, can't sleep in the summer and can't handle the winter, and also complain about not having enough to do. Other people enjoy and embrace the change, admire and are stunned by the exposure and space out here, and take advantage of being in a world where you truly can feel free. I guess there are more people as well who probably just get on with it and don't care either way!! Ah well, wherever you go, there is something different and memorble.

Always a pleasure to know you visit and read, your words are noted as always. Nice pun there as well, you are setting your own standards. I'm enjoying this blog stuff, but unfortunately I have been unable to keep up on the posts to the same output as you, how the fuck do you do it?? Its like Dame Barbara Cartland but quality instead of "romantic turd"!!? - I must add though, I have never read a full novel by Dame Babs.
What sound?
What silence?
This is what i think of when i
read this post.
Poetic.
ohhhhhhhhhh
the photo is stunning btw.
Magical! The post and the photograph :).

Hi Sophie, sorry for the late response (if you ever come back to this page again!) the last couple of months have been hectic for me. Your words mean a lot as always, one of the nicest things about writing a spot like this is to sometimes conjure thoughts like this in people's minds, the northern lights are definitely another reason for poetry I think, and of course always deadly silent.

Thanks for the kind comments, magical is another word that I could've used here, its maybe too hard to capture everything in a short piece of writing and a picture, but fun trying.
